Vintage Sports Car Racing Challenge At Le Mans Classic 2016 In Photos
Since 1923, around 50 cars have competed in the race each year on average, Le Mans Classic 2016 is an opportunity to discover or rediscover the great vehicles from over 90-year history of motorsport racing. A purpose of this 3-day vintage sports car racing event is to give for fans an extraordinary experience by offering them a flashback of vehicles, what have made the mythical reputation for 24 Hours of Le Mans race. As the years passed, this world famous auto race saw hundreds of exceptional vehicles, with styles and unique technical properties. It’s time to get back into the history of the world’s greatest endurance race.
Vintage Sports Car Racing
Le Mans Classic is the retrospective of the greatest race in the world. Created in 2002, LM Classic taking place every two years in July. The eligible cars are the ones the model of which participated at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Priority is given to the proper cars that entered in the 24H LeMans race.
Epic Car Racing Times
In total, Le Mans Classic 2016 racing event has more than 550 retro racing cars on the track, divided by 6 categories over a period from 1923 to 1981. Each of the six grids achieves one day and one-night practice session, as well as three rounds. Each grid gathers 75 cars of same eras.
“Le Mans Classic Start”
The Le Mans classic start procedure: the cars park at the angle, engine switched off. The drivers take place in front of their car on the opposite side of the racing track, under the Clerk of the Course’s orders.
At the starting orders, the drivers run towards their car and start.

Each round lasts about 43 minutes. each round may be run by a different driver.

24 Hours of Le Mans (24 Heures du Mans) endurance car competition was (and still is for that matter) the way for best automobile manufacturers to demonstrate their new vehicles and the improvements they have made to it. In total, this vintage sports car racing event 2016 has greatest race cars from all car companies worldwide on the track, a thousand drivers, and even ten former winners of the 24 Hours Race, including the last winner 24H Le Mans 2016 – Romain Dumas.
Grid 1: pre-war cars from 1923 to 1939
Vintage Bentley Cars
A touring Bentley raced in the first Le Mans 24 Hours in 1923. First victory with a Bentley 3 litre in 1924. Four wins followed in 1927, 1928, 1929 and 1930. The Bently boys sometimes financed their annual expedition to the Sarthe in France. Last time Bentley won in LeMans 24H race in 2003 with Bentley Speed 8 car.
Grid 2: Post-war era 1949 – 1956
Jaguar Classic Cars
Jaguar began its Le Mans success story with a car closely derived from the series production sports model the Jaguar XK 120. A car was called the Jaguar C-Type and it won the race in 1951 and 1953. Jaguar reigned on the circuit de la Sarthe in the 50s with four victories (1951, 53, 55 and 56).
An Anglo-French make linked to Darracq and Clemet, Talbot was created in 1902. The Talbot 105s from the British branch won at Brooklands in 1931 and raced at Le Mans three times scoring 3 third places in before the WW2. Unlike the pre-war period, the French arm shone with a superb Talbot Lago T26 GS double in 1950.
Grid 3: 1957 – 1961
Founded in 1947 to built and run racing cars (plus street versions), Ferrari entered for Le Mans in 1949 and win the event with a 2-litre Ferrari 166 MM V12. Second time Ferrari win 24H race in 1954 with the 375 Plus model (4.9 litres!). Ferrari 250 GT outright victory contender every year, added 7 wins to its tally in 1958, 60, 61, 62, 63, 64, and 1965! Same domination in GT in 1959, 1960, 1961, 1963, 1965 and 3-litre class in 1964.
Grid 4: 1962 – 1965
Porsche Le Mans debut was in 1951. In 1960 and 1961, The Porsche Carrera Abarths won the 1600 class and in 1961, the RS 61 was 5th and 1st in 2 litres category. In 1962, two Porsche 695 GS (Carrera Abrath) finished 1st in the 1600 class. The following year Porsche run a different engine at LeMans 24H race to the flat-four, a 2 litre flat-8 in two 718/8s models, one of which came home 8th and 1st in class. In 1964 the 904 Porsche car made its debut with 4 or 8 cylinders. In 1965, the flat-six had its first outing in a 904 model, 4th overall and 1st in the 2000 class. The final phase before Stuttgart team attained the Holy Grail. The little prototypes got faster and faster. But still no outright victory. Until 1970, when Porsche 917 cars were 1st and 2nd in overall. And the same result for 24H Le Mans 1971.
Grid 5: 1966 – 1971
Henry Ford founded a company in 1903 and one of his popular car the Ford T raced at Le Mans from 1923 to 1925. His grandson, Henry Ford 2, launched Ford GT40 model to win Le Mans race among other. GT40 debuted in 1964, returned in 1965 setting the fastest lap in each race event, but failed to see the flag. And finally, the 7 litres Ford GT40 Mk25 won LeMans 24H races in 1966, 1967, 1968 and 1969. It was a well-deserved victory for engineers, who had acquired in three years the motorsport racing culture they lacked in first Ford GT40 racing cars.
Grid 6: 1972 – 1981 years
John Wyer, the man behind the success of Aston Martin in 1959 and Ford GT40 in 1968 and 1969, baptized the cars he created in 1967 derived from famous Ford GT. In 1975, his light single seated based Gulf Mirage gave the Ford Cosworth victory in the LeMans 24H race.

Le Mans Dress Code
The Le Mans Classic places great importance to the elegance of the participants and even defines a “dress code”: leave your T-shirts and Bermuda shorts at home.
Of course, the idea is not at all to prescribe a severe dress code but to create an interaction between the audience and the vintage sports car racing event at Le Mans Classic 2016, to make everybody an actor of it. A crazy atmosphere that brought together no less than 123 000 people 2016. And the Le Mans weather in July provides an ambiance totally unlike any other anywhere else in the world. Vintage sports car racing event Le Mans Classic 2016 really give the impression to live in Le Mans Car Museum.
